About this design

The Red Heart pattern is the friendliest possible introduction to graphghan crochet. Two colours, a 45×45 grid, and a shape that reads from across the room. It's a brilliant first project for anyone who has done single crochet but never tried following a chart.

Charts like this are at the heart of what Bobble does, you read it square-by-square, change colour where the chart changes colour, and you end up with a recognisable image. Once you've made the heart you'll find every other pattern easier.

Pair it with cream or white as the background for maximum contrast, or try a soft pink for a more muted look. Worsted-weight (Aran) yarn gives a softer finish than DK if you'd prefer a bit more drape.

Good for

  • Valentine's cushion cover
  • Beginner's first colour-work piece
  • Patchwork square in a sampler blanket

Questions about this design

How many stitches is the Red Heart chart?

45 by 45 squares, 2025 stitches in total. Worked in single crochet it comes out at about 25 by 23 cm (10 by 9 in).

What yarn do I need for the Red Heart chart?

DK-weight yarn in 2 colours, with a 4 mm hook: about 60 m of Red and 52 m of White, including a 10% allowance for tension and tails.

Can I make the Red Heart chart in corner-to-corner (C2C)?

Yes. It is a colour grid, so it works either row by row or on the diagonal. Make Mode takes you through it in Single crochet (SC), and the grid is the same whichever you choose.
