About this design

Gingham repeats every 6 stitches and every 6 rounds, so it is the easiest of the baubles to read: once the first check is right, the rest follow it. Every round uses two colours.

The base and top are red. For a softer bauble, swap the red for a sage green and the pink for a pale green.

Good for

  • Christmas tree decoration
  • Kitchen or table decoration
  • First tapestry in the round

How to make it

Tap Make this and the design opens in Bobble as your own project, with its colour palette, ready to make round by round in Make Mode.

How the cover is built: a flat base worked in rounds up to 42 stitches, a straight band of 12 rounds around the middle where the chart sits, then decrease rounds down to an opening of 12 stitches that the bauble's cap shows through. The chart is the band: one row of the chart for each round, read right to left every round, with its left and right edges meeting at the join.

UK terms. Each square is one double crochet (dc), worked over the colours you carry; in US terms, a single crochet (sc).

Questions about this design

How many stitches is the Gingham Bauble chart?

42 stitches round × 12 rounds, 792 stitches in total. It fits an 8 cm (3 in) bauble.

What yarn do I need for the Gingham Bauble chart?

DK-weight yarn in 3 colours, with a 4 mm hook: about 24 m of Pillar Red, 16 m of Ballet Pink and 8 m of Champagne White, including a 10% allowance for tension and tails.

What size bauble does it fit?

An 8 cm (3 in) plastic bauble, at Bobble's DK tension on a 4 mm hook. The cover is a little smaller than the bauble, so it sits snugly.
