Stripes are the calmest possible introduction to multi-colour crochet. There are no within-row colour changes to worry about — you finish one stripe in red, fasten off (or carry up the side), join orange, do the orange stripe, and so on. Six bands, six colours, one tidy rectangle.
The rainbow palette works for nursery and kids' blankets, pride flag projects, or just a cheerful throw for the sofa. Swap the colour order and you've got a different mood entirely — try cool tones (blues and greens) for a calmer piece, or warm tones (reds, oranges, yellows) for autumn.
At 30×40 squares the finished blanket is small — pram-sized rather than lap-sized. For a bigger version, open the chart in Bobble and bump the dimensions up.
